Who is entitled to a free sight test at home?

The NHS will pay for an eye exam at home if an individual is-

A) Unable to attend a community opticians practice unaccompanied due to a mental or physical condition (even if it is temporary)

AND

B) Meets one or more of the following criteria-

The patient is-

You may be entitled to a free NHS eye test if you:
•       Are aged 60 or over
•       Are under 16
•       Are 16–18 and in full-time education
•       Have been diagnosed with diabetes
•       Have glaucoma, or are at risk of glaucoma
•       Are aged 40 or over and have a parent, sibling, or child with glaucoma
•       Are advised by an ophthalmologist that you’re at risk of eye disease
•       Are registered blind or partially sighted
•       Are entitled to or named on:
o       Income Support
o       Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
o       Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
o       Universal Credit (subject to eligibility criteria)
o       Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
•       Hold a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
•       Are named on a valid HC2 certificate (full help with health costs)

Do I get help towards the cost of my glasses?

Accepted Answer

Patients may be entitled to a NHS voucher towards the cost of their spectacles if they are any of the following:

You may be entitled to an NHS optical voucher if you:
•       Are under 16
•       Are 16–18 and in full-time education
•       Are entitled to or named on:
o       Income Support
o       Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
o       Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
o       Universal Credit (meeting eligibility criteria)
o       Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
•       Hold a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
•       Are named on a valid HC2 certificate (full help with health costs)
•       Are eligible for an NHS eye test due to complex lenses (as advised by an optician)

Can I have a home visit if I’m not eligible for an NHS eye test?

Yes. You can still book a home eye test with Vision Visit as a private appointment. The fee for a private home visit is £60.

Many people choose a private home visit even if they’re not NHS-eligible, for reasons such as:

•       Convenience — no need to travel to a high-street practice
•       Busy schedules — ideal if you have limited time or work commitments
•       Comfort — have your eye test in familiar surroundings
•       Personalised service — unhurried, one-to-one care
•       Difficulty attending appointments due to transport or mobility issues

A private home visit includes the same thorough eye examination and professional care you would expect in an opticians practice.

Is your optometrist DBS checked?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Mitch, the optometrist at Vision Visit, holds an Enhanced DBS (formerly CRB) check. This means he has been thoroughly vetted to work with vulnerable adults and patients in their own homes, giving you
complete peace of mind during your visit.

Will it be a full sight test?

Accepted Answer

Yes! We work with state of the art equipment that is specially modified to allow us to provide a thorough eye examination virtually anywhere.

Using our equipment we can test for-
- Prescription changes
- Glaucoma
- Cataract
- Macular degeneration
- Eye muscle imbalances
- Eye lid problems
- Retinal detachments
- Plus many other conditions...

We can also supply and fit spectacles from a large range of frames and lenses from the comfort of your own home.

Do you offer hearing tests?

Vision Visit does not carry out hearing tests directly, but we work closely with a trusted partner audiologist. This means we can help arrange a home hearing assessment if required, providing the same convenient, at-home service.

If you’re interested in a hearing test alongside your eye care, just let us know and we’ll be happy to advise or make a referral.

Do I need to prepare anything before my appointment? No preparation is required — we bring everything needed for your home eye test.

However, it can be helpful to have the following to hand if available:

•       Your current glasses (including any older pairs)
•       A list of medications you are taking
•       Any hospital or consultant letters relating to your eyes

This information helps us build a complete picture of your eye health and ensures the most accurate assessment possible.

Can you test someone with dementia or complex needs?

Yes. We have extensive experience working with patients who have dementia or complex needs. We use specialist equipment and adapted testing methods to ensure the eye test is as comfortable and effective
as possible.

Our approach is patient, calm, and unhurried, and we’re always happy for a family member or carer to be present during the visit.

What happens if I need to be referred to hospital?

If a hospital referral is needed, we can write and arrange a referral with your consent. We’ll explain clearly why a referral is recommended and what the next steps are. Our aim is to make the process simple and stress-free, ensuring you receive the appropriate care as smoothly as possible.

We bring a large selection of frames to your home, designed to suit a variety of styles, face shapes, and personal preferences. Whether you prefer classic, modern, or more colourful designs, we’ll help you find the perfect pair in the comfort of your own home.

Can you reglaze my existing frames?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We can replace the lenses in your current frames, but we will need to take your frames away temporarily to complete the work. It’s a good idea to have a spare pair of glasses while we do this, so you’re never without your vision.
